Kailey has been selected as one of five composers to participate in the New Dramatists Guild Composer/Librettist Studio! From January 18th-February 3rd, Kailey will collaborate with five playwrights and five actors, creating five new musical theatre pieces. SONGS FOR SLUTTY GIRLS is an original feminist song cycle that charts the joys and the frustrations of today’s sexually liberated young women by looking into the intimate lives of three characters and the voices of society. The show features an exciting contemporary pop-rock score by Kailey Marshall and a libretto by Nessie Nankivell. The show has been previously developed in concert at Don’t Tell Mama and as a workshop at Pace University through the Pace New Musicals program. Songs for Slutty Girls is a peppy, poppy, and potent exploration of female sexuality in the 21st century. From walks of shame to heartfelt revelations, Songs for Slutty Girls encapsulates the varied sexual landscape of dating in New York City. This song cycle seeks to redefine the word “slut” through a pop/rock score that captures the anger and ecstasy of the modern liberated woman.
Described as the Lena Dunham of NYC musical theatre writers, Kailey Marshall’s evocative and electric songs have been featured at 54 Below, Joe’s Pub, the Highline Ballroom and more. Kailey Marshall recently won the Fresh Pens Contest in July 2014 with her song “Give It Up” from her musical Confirmed.
